Selection Guides

Practical guides for alloy selection, form choice, and application matching.

What's included

  • Alloy Selection Guide — how to choose between 1xxx, 3xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx, and 7xxx series based on application.
  • Form Selection Guide — when to use sheets, coils, plates, pipes, profiles, billets, ingots, discs, or wire rods.
  • Application Matching — recommended alloys and forms by industry, with example specifications.

Alloy Selection Guide

Alloy SeriesKey CharacteristicStrengthCorrosion ResistanceFormability / WeldabilityHeat-TreatableTypical Use Case
1xxxCommercially pure aluminum (≥99% Al)LowExcellentExcellent formability, excellent weldabilityNoElectrical conductors, heat exchangers, chemical/food equipment
3xxxAluminum-ManganeseLow–MediumVery goodExcellent formability, good weldabilityNoRoofing and cladding, HVAC coils, food and beverage containers, general sheet metal work
5xxxAluminum-MagnesiumMedium–HighExcellent, especially in marine/saltwater environmentsGood formability, excellent weldabilityNoMarine and shipbuilding, tanks and pressure vessels, structural panels, automotive body sheet
6xxxAluminum-Magnesium-SiliconMediumGoodExcellent extrudability, good weldabilityYesArchitectural and structural profiles, window/door frames, automotive and industrial structural parts
7xxxAluminum-ZincHighestLower — often needs surface protectionLower formability, generally not recommended for welding without special process controlYesHigh-stress structural and load-bearing applications, aerospace-grade components

As strength increases from 1xxx → 7xxx, corrosion resistance and ease of forming/welding generally decrease — 5xxx sits at the practical balance point for weldable, corrosion-resistant structural work, while 6xxx is preferred where extrusion and moderate strength are both needed.

Form Selection Guide

Product FormTypical Fabrication RouteBest Suited For
Coils / SheetsRolling (hot then cold rolled, coiled)High-volume flat products: cladding, roofing, HVAC fin stock, general fabrication, further slitting/cutting
PlatesRolling (thicker gauge, supplied flat)Structural and heavy-duty flat components, tooling, machined parts
DiscsRolling + circle blankingDeep-drawn products — cookware, lighting reflectors, pressure cookers
Pipes / TubesExtrusion or welding + drawingFluid and gas conveyance, structural tube, railings
ProfilesExtrusionArchitectural sections, window/door frames, structural framing, custom cross-sections
Bars / RodsExtrusion or drawingMachining stock, structural bar, fasteners
BilletsCast (as extrusion feedstock)Input material for profile/bar extrusion — not typically an end-use product
IngotsCast (as rolling/casting feedstock)Input material for sheet/plate rolling or foundry casting — not typically an end-use product
Wire RodExtrusion or continuous casting + drawingFeedstock for wire drawing — cable, rivets, welding wire

These are general starting points based on standard industry practice — confirm the exact alloy, temper, and form against your project's engineering specification before ordering.

Not sure which alloy or form fits?

Share your application, load case, and finish requirements — our technical team will recommend an alloy, temper, and form combination and confirm availability.
